Why is the server chassis named u?
Goldenor server chassis 2021-07-01
All the time, some customers have been asking Editor, why do you call your goldenor Server chassis U?
In fact, this is not the exclusive name of goldenor, but the international common name.
U, It is the abbreviation of unit, which is made by the electronic industry association of America (EIA).
In the case, manufacturing industry of Rackmount Chassis, formed a unified specification, easy to mutual compatibility and adaptation. Especially in practical application, it brings great convenience to users and saves social resources.
U is a specific height unit. The conversion relationship between the standard height of a U and the international standard length units "meters" and inches is, 1u = 44.45mm = 1.75in.
Generally, Server chassis with height calculated by u will match the size of 482.6 mm = 19 inches in width to form a specific industrial box standard.
At present, in many industries, the industries with u as the high standard are industrial control and information communication industries.
In the data center and equipment room, there will be a large number of Rackmount Chassis for placing equipment, and the more common equipment is the server. Due to the limited volume resources of the Server chassis room, and in order to maximize the benefits and shorten the return period of investment, investors usually pay for the use of the Server chassis room according to the unit of u when providing it to users.
For the convenience of cost control and management, users have to use standard height equipment.
Using u to unify the external specifications of the Rackmount chassis and put the servers on the Server chassis can not only save space, but also ensure the uniform direction of the cooling duct, which is conducive to rapid cooling, daily maintenance and effective management of messy cables.
Now the most common is 42U Rackmount chassis, that is to say, each Rackmount chassis can set up 42 1U rack servers to other multiples of servers. Of course, the installation density depends on its power consumption, bandwidth, temperature control and other factors. The common U Rackmount chassis are:
Specification of 1U server chassis
Width: 482.6MM
Height: 44.45mm
2U server chassis specification
Width: 482.6MM
Height: 88.9mm
4U server chassis specification
Width: 482.6MM
Height: 177.8mm
As for the length (depth) of the chassis, it depends on the size of the motherboard. If it is erected in a special Rackmount chassis, it must consider the depth of the Rackmount chassis. At present, the depth of the Rackmount chassis is generally 600, 800, 900, 1000, 1200mm, etc.
According to Mr. Feng Chenghai, general manager of goldenor, an intelligent manufacturer of precision Rackmount chassis, it is rare to see the density of 42 u per cabinet in the Rackmount chassis rooms he inspected. In addition to the above factors, the control ability of cabinet and case manufacturers to the absolute tolerance of height needs to be improved. What's more, after the server is installed with internal hardware, the gravity of its components will challenge the material, structural design and manufacturing process of the Rackmount chassis to varying degrees. Therefore, precision "U" Rackmount chassis must have certain strength.
Taking a comprehensive view of the manufacturing process of U- Rackmount chassis products, when the batch production quantity reaches 100000 sets or the order is confirmed to be stable, the multi-stage process mold is generally used for production. This production mode can effectively guarantee the product quality and improve the operation efficiency, but the expensive mold cost in the early stage and the separation in the later stage make many manufacturers very cautious. Therefore, many manufacturers will use sheet metal equipment for production in the early stage, in order to cope with the unlimited changes of the mold in the early differentiation and personalization stage. Especially in the case of unstable orders, the advantage of using sheet metal equipment for production and controlling financial losses is more prominent.
